What is Halloween?

Like most things that originated in early history, it all seems a bit blurry.  But one version is that the Ancient Celts believed that on All Hallow’s Eve, the spirits of the dead would try to take over the bodies of the living. The idea of scaring the spirits away with bonfires and scary costumes or practical jokes and confusing tricks is probably the basis of what is understood to be the trick part of trick-or-treat

Sometimes in life things go a bit wrong and we try to use a number of different devises like humour, anger, drink, food etc. etc. as an attempt to disguise how we feel and in order to “trick” ourselves into feeling better and to make the problem go away.

I am not sure how the Ancient Celts believed it ended and whether the tricking worked but I am sure that it doesn’t work when we turn to alternative things rather than deal with the issue that we are trying to get away from.
