Ideas for New Year Resolutions 2019

Most years we all make resolutions that most of us don’t keep.  Many of us often say “this year things are going to change”.  However things don’t change.  We do.  If relationships etc are not going so well sometimes it isn’t just about changing them it is also figuring out what is going on with us and to discover why we are feeling the way we do.  Life will continue to peak and dip – that is the nature of life as we know it – but how we react to those peaks and dips is the important thing.

Our past, our relationships, our work, our roles as parents, siblings or children as well as a multitude of other things can all contribute to how we feel about ourselves.  These can add up to feelings of low self-esteem and confidence and we can become anxious or angry.  Sometimes life can seem so overwhelming – we turn left and there’s a problem, we turn right and there’s another. Every little thing seems bigger somehow and with every bit of a dip it seems even harder to pull ourselves up.

Will Garcia said   “the first step towards change is acceptance.  Once you accept yourself, you open the door to change.  That’s all you have to do.  Change is not something you do, it’s something you allow”.

If you are having difficulty in accepting yourself as you are and to feel at peace with the life you are living, maybe it isn’t just as simple as going back on that diet or planning to give up the third glass of alcohol each night or whatever your New Year’s Resolution is.  Maybe it is dealing with what keeps you stuck and wanting that extra bit of something that you are trying to compensate with?    We tend to make life quite complicated for ourselves.  If we don’t like ourselves or the life we are living we can change it.  It may seem easier to say than do but actually it’s not as difficult as you first think!!  As Will Garcia, and others, say the key is all about knowing and accepting yourself.

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves” – Carl Jung

“The problem is not that there are problems.  The problem is expecting otherwise and thinking that having problems is a problem” – Theodore Rubin

“The difficulties of life are intended to make us better, not bitter” – Author Unknown

“As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being” – Carl Jung

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.  The secret of getting started is breaking your overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks and then starting on the first” – Mark Twain
