Drinking to Oblivion – A Counselling Perspective
In light of the Louis Theroux’s documentary on BBC TV last night, the sad thing is that addictions are still such a “hidden” thing. I naively thought that having advertised the fact that I was here to support people in looking at why their drinking/gambling/sex/drug use was causing them issues and how they could overcome them without the need for such self-defeating behaviours – then that would be that. Together we could make the difference. Unfortunately, however, my experience is that some people are still finding it difficult to engage in such a dialogue.
My question’s is therefore:
How much pain does a person have to go through to work out that if they just stopped and faced their demons they would be able to enjoy rather than endure life?
Will that stopping be easy – probably not.
Will the unravelling of their pain be hard – undoubtedly yes.
Will it be worth it – absolutely.
